About Cullowhee

The Town of Cullowhee is a university town in Jackson County, North Carolina, and is situated in a valley along a mountain river. It is known as "The Valley of the Lilies" based on a translation of the Cherokee name.


Originally a Cherokee village, Cullowhee was one of the first European settlements in Jackson County. It was also one of the first to have a school in the area. Its current population is about 9,500. It has an elevation of 2,116 feet, and can have highs in the 90s (°F) during the summer months.
